Relocation in France is sold by agencies, networks, freelancers and platforms, and almost none publish a price. Here is how to tell them apart and what to ask before you pay.

The short answer

Before you pay a relocation agency in Paris, check which services it does itself, whether it works in your language, what the written quote covers and who does what on your permit file. Almost no French agency publishes prices, so a written quote is the only way to compare two of them.

ReloFinder lists 32 agencies with a French office, 15 of them in Paris. By type they are 20 agencies, 4 relocation management companies, 3 freelancers, 2 networks and 3 other firms (data export of 7 Oct 2026). EuRA's quality seal list names seven French companies, and the French trade union SNPRM was founded in 1995.

Do I need a relocation agency in Paris?

Not always. If your employer has a relocation policy, ask HR first: it may already have a provider, and a company contract changes who pays. If you are an EU citizen with a job, you may need little more than a home and a few appointments. If you arrive from outside the EU, or you cannot visit flats, or you have children, an agency can save weeks.

If the flat is the main job, read how to find an apartment in Paris. If the paperwork is the main job, read what settling-in services in France include. This guide covers the step before: choosing who to ask.

What kinds of provider sell relocation in France?

ReloFinder lists 32 agencies with a French office: 20 agencies, 4 relocation management companies, 3 freelancers, 2 networks and 3 other firms (France directory, data export of 7 Oct 2026). Fifteen have an office in Paris, 6 in Lyon, and 4 each in Marseille and Toulouse. In plain terms:

  • Relocation agencies. They sell home search, settling-in help and school search. Of the 32, 30 work in English and 25 list French.
  • Relocation management companies. They run moves for employers, often in several countries, and sell to HR first.
  • Networks and global companies. They work through partners, so ask who will do the work in your city.
  • Freelancers. One person who works alone. Check who covers you when they are away.
  • Rental platforms and brokers. A platform may list furnished homes and add a relocation page. Their income may come from the landlord or from you, so ask.
  • Immigration firms. They start from the permit file and sometimes add a lease or a bank account.
  • Movers. A removals firm that also sells destination help. Check that the destination service has its own consultant.

Is a relocation agent the same as a letting agent?

No, and the difference decides who pays. When a letting agency handles the letting of a home, service-public.fr says the fees for the file, the visit and the lease are shared between tenant and landlord, with the tenant’s share capped at half of the bill and at EUR 8.07 to 12.10 per m2 depending on the zone. The other letting fees are the landlord’s, and the agency must display the maximum price of each service and who pays it (service-public.fr, verified 12 Jan 2026).

A relocation agent you hire works for you, and the price is a matter between the two of you. Ask every provider one question: who hired you for this home?

What should I check before hiring?

  1. Services. Home search, appointments, residence card help, school search. Ask which the firm does itself and which it passes to a partner.
  2. City. The firm should have a person who works in Paris, not only in Lyon or on the Riviera.
  3. Language. Of the 32 agencies listed, 30 work in English and 25 list French. If you need Spanish, German or another language, ask for a named consultant who speaks it.
  4. Membership. EuRA says its quality seal, the EGQS+, is an external audit based on an ISO 9001 process management model, and its list names seven French companies (EuRA seal page, EuRA list, read 7 Oct 2026). Of the 32 agencies on ReloFinder, 21 list EuRA membership, as the agencies state it, so check each claim yourself. The French national union, the SNPRM, was founded in 1995 by established companies to set an ethics code, according to a member firm’s page, last modified in 2014 (Relocation Service). We could not find a public member list. Membership shows a firm has been vouched for or audited. It does not show how it treats you.
  5. The company behind the quote. Ask for the full legal name and the company number (SIREN), and check that the name on the quote matches the name on the invoice.
  6. Reviews. Open the Google listing of the agency itself and read the newest reviews first. Count them, and check that the listing is the same business and city.
  7. A written quote. See below.

Why does a written quote matter so much in France?

Because there is nothing public to compare. Our research read the websites of 31 French agencies on 6 October 2026 and found no price. A quote you can compare names the scope in steps, the price of each, the number of viewings, whether VAT is included and what you pay if nothing is found. Our cost guide lists the official figures around a move, so you can tell a service fee from a government tax or a capped letting fee.

Who does what on my residence card file?

Ask this before you sign. The official procedure for a talent card, for example, is a request that you file on the state’s online portal for residence permits, ANEF, and the prefecture then confirms when the card is available and what tax is due (service-public.fr, verified 1 Jun 2026). Whatever an agency offers on your file, ask what exactly it will do, in writing, who is responsible if the file is refused, and what you must do yourself. Our settling-in guide lists the official steps.

What are the red flags?

  • You are asked to pay more than the legal share of a letting agency’s fees. Check the caps above.
  • No written quote, or a quote that does not say what counts as a result.
  • A promise of a home or an appointment by a date. Nobody controls the market or the prefecture.
  • Full payment before work, with no scope in writing.
  • A platform or broker that will not say who pays it for the home you are viewing.
  • Membership claims you cannot find on the EuRA site.
  • Pressure to decide today.

How does ReloFinder list agencies?

ReloFinder is an independent directory. It ranks agencies by one number, the ReloFinder score: the Google rating of their own listing, weighted by the number of reviews behind it. Agencies without a rating yet come after the rated ones, marked “Not rated yet”. An agency with a paid profile appears in a separate band above the list, labelled “Recommended, paid placement”, and the ranking itself cannot be bought. The method is public on the how we rank page. To ask for help, get matched: your request goes to one agency that serves your city, or up to three if you ask to compare. You can also browse the France directory.

Questions to ask on the first call

  1. Who will be my consultant, and in which city are they based?
  2. What is the price of each step, is VAT included, and what do expenses add?
  3. How many viewings does the price cover?
  4. What exactly will you do on my residence card file, and what do I do?
  5. What do I pay if you find nothing?
  6. Who pays you for the home I am viewing?
  7. Do you work with my employer?

What we could not source

We found no public member list of the SNPRM, no published agency price and no official list of relocation agencies. The kinds of firm and the office counts come from ReloFinder’s data export of 7 October 2026 and are not an official count. The SNPRM page is a member firm’s, last modified in 2014.

Common questions

How many relocation agencies work in Paris?

ReloFinder lists 15 agencies with an office in Paris, out of 32 with a French office (data export of 7 Oct 2026). Offices in the suburbs are counted under their own town, so the number of agencies that serve Paris is higher. It is a count of agencies with an office, not of every freelancer who works with clients in Paris.

Why do so few French agencies publish prices?

We do not know the reason. Our research read the websites of 31 agencies on 6 October 2026 and found no price on any of them. The practical answer is to ask for a written quote that names the scope, the number of viewings, VAT and what you pay if no home is found.

Is a relocation agency the same as a letting agency in France?

No. A letting agency finds a tenant for a landlord, and service-public.fr says some of its fees are shared with the tenant, capped at half of the bill and at EUR 8.07 to 12.10 per m2 by zone, while the rest are the landlord's. A relocation agency you hire works for you. Ask every provider who hired them for the home you are viewing.

Is there a trade body for relocation in France?

Yes, the SNPRM, the national union of relocation and mobility professionals, founded in 1995 by established companies to set an ethics code, according to a member firm's page last modified in 2014. We could not find a public member list. EuRA, the European association, was set up in 1998 on the initiative of SNPRM members.

How does ReloFinder rank agencies?

One score: the Google rating of the agency's own listing, weighted by how many reviews stand behind it. Agencies cannot pay for their rank. A paid profile appears in a separate band labelled Recommended, paid placement. The method is on the how we rank page.
